Salon 51 Helps Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

When you walk through the doors of 51 E Prospect Road in Oakland Park, one sees a clean, inviting, and neatly organized hair salon but what one doesn’t know as that it also conceals a hidden treasure. That treasure is a person, and her name is Barbara Ann, the owner of Salon 51.

Barbara Ann earned her hairdresser’s license in 1990, and a year later she bought Garden Beauty and renamed it Salon 51. The salon grew and thrived and through all the ups and downs of running a new business Barbara Ann also saw three beloved coworkers go through the rigors of breast cancer. Thankfully, all three of them survived, but this left a deep impression in Barbara Ann, so she came up with a brilliant way to give back to the community while spreading awareness for Breast Cancer.

Haircuts for a Cause

In honor of her coworkers Dee Dee and Marysia (and another one who preferred to remain anonymous), Barbara Ann came up with Haircuts for a Cause. Barbara smiles and says, “All three are my girls, I love them and they survived and they’re kickin’ it! They survived it, which is so awesome!”.

This event is beneficial for the American Cancer Society as well as for her clients. But Barbara Ann wants to expand beyond her client base. She wants to reach the entire community. For the last 2 years, Barbara has organized haircuts for donations where all monies collected going straight to the American Cancer Society. The first year, she collected $650.00. Then last year, due to Covid, she only collected $350.00.

Today with more people coming out of their homes, Barbara Ann is hoping to attract more people to to get haircuts and help her with this generous cause. She is offering her time and talent for people to come in and get a haircut, wash and blow, or color, in exchange for a donation – any donation amount! Tips are also appreciated and even those go to the cause, not one penny goes to the salon or to Barbara Ann. So what is not to like about this cause?

The Main Event

Barbara Ann will be donating her services for this cause on Sunday, October 17, from 12p.m. to 5p.m. Please call Salon 51 at (954) 776-5070, and ask for Barbara Ann to make your appointment! Walk-ins are ok, too.

You can expect great service, goody bags, and the overall great feeling that you are taking part in an amazing cause. Plus, you’ll walk out of there feeling renewed after being pampered. Who knows! You may even want to come back and become a regular at Salon 51!

Looking Ahead

Barbara Ann hopes that her event will reach far and wide. She hopes to bring more to her salon like entertainers and live music. Barbara says, “We haven’t done anything really big yet, but my goal is in a few years to have people come in and do things, like having a singer or vendors”.

She hopes to bring in more money to turn over to the American Cancer Society. In the name of Dee Dee, Marysia, and all those fighting cancer, Barbara Ann really is a hero without a cape.
