The train runs on two different tracks in the City of Oakland Park. One on the east side, parallel to Dixie Highway and one on the west side, parallel to Powerline Road.
As a result, train accidents, unfortunately, are not a rare occurrence.
Less than a year ago in October a pedestrian was killed on the tracks on Oakland Park Boulevard and I95. Less than a year before the death of that pedestrian, a driver trying to beat the train was hit by the Brightline in downtown Oakland Park, ultimately killing him.
Today, it happened again at the intersection of Powerline Road and Prospect Rd.
At 11am, Frank Polanco, local resident, artist and photographer alerted members of the Living In Oakland Park Facebook group that there was heavy police presence at the intersection.
According to BSO a call came in at 8:45am to their Regional Communications Center. It was reported that a person had been hit and killed by a southbound Tri-Rail commuter train near Prospect Road and Powerline Road in Oakland Park.
When BSO arrived at the scene, they found the body of the deceased pedestrian, a male. BSO deployed their Homicide unit and Crime Scene investigators to explore the circumstances that led to the tragic death.
No other information about the person that was struck has been released to the public.
None of the train’s passengers were injured. The train waited on the tracks for about two hours while BSO detectives and the Crime Scene investigators gathered evidence. The commuter train was then released and continued its morning route. was able to continue on its morning route thereafter.
